Choosing the Poetic Life

It's time to stop hiding!

I wrote a few months back about looking under the bed to see what’s there because it probably matters to you or is something you want to be doing more of. Back then I suggested that it’s probably under the bed because your life space needs adjusting to catch up with how you’ve been growing. There is, though, a more sinister possibility – it may be under the bed because you’re hiding it. And both can be true at the same time… we often hide what really matters to us.

We have so many ways of hiding our true selves and what matters to us. We fear it doesn’t count for much and pack it away. We tidy up the mess it threatens to make, disregarding the joy it might bring. We discount it for other people who want our time and energy, for obligations. We make ourselves into what other people, or jobs, seem to want. We adapt and adjust our selves for fear of being too loud or too strong.

(Note: true friends and soulmates only want us to be who we truly are, and nurture our growing.)

We hide by telling ourselves the work is not good enough, will be sneered at. We hide by keeping quiet, by not speaking up. By not claiming the space or time we need. We hide by settling for less than our true desires, again and again.

I’m here to tell you that it’s time to stop hiding!

By the way, stopping hiding is not about being more extravert. Coming out of hiding is not actually about shouting or showing off. It’s about knowing more clearly what matters most to us in our lives, and then providing the conditions for that to happen, to grow, to be nurtured.
